July 25, 2007: "i think this is thievery"
i was reading some outdated issue of time and came across an article mentioning jules verne's journey to the center of the earth. now, when i was a youngling, my literary collection consisted of the babysitter's club and garfield - of which are still in my possession today - and i embraced no shame then or now. live on, jim davis. at any rate, my greater, higher-being, older sister replaced my (sophisticated, no less) library with jules verne one day. at age ten back then, i believe my response was something similar to, "get rid of that $%@#% french man and give me my garfield back."
clearly, my french was already quite proficient at such an early age.
but really, i tried to read journey to the center of the earth. there have been many attempts - i understand that jules verne is a highly notable author, being the third most translated in the world and everything. blah, blah, blah. and i've tried to read 20,000 leagues under the sea, and i've even tried to read de la terre a la lune, and i've concluded: jules verne isn't my cup of tea in any language. however, although i am undoubtedly no aficionado of mr. verne, i do know i have a copy of his book in some corner gathering dust. so, i've decided that by just having that book, i've enjoyed the pleasure that is jules verne's writing, as so many others have.
actually, it's a library book.
from about eight years ago?
nice.
i hope no one's looking for it.

omigawd, i love your layout and coding! this is amazing.
hahahaha i loved the BSC & Garfield books. XD I read soooo many books when i was younger- everything i could get my hands on.
Now i'm more "internet crazed" but if it's a good book vs the net, i pick the book, i THINK. XD
[Alyssa] Monday, July 30th
I haven't read any Jules Verne books, but The Babysitter's Club and Garfield were pretty damn awesome. hehe X) I also have tons of books from years ago. I still have books that I bought that I haven't read yet. Way to be Alyssa. Way to be. lol
[Kaisa] Monday, July 30th
Blah, I've never read anything written by Jules Verne. I was more into Nancy Drew and Calvin and Hobbes :P
[Brianna] Monday, July 30th
Ack... 20,000 leagues? That style of writing has NEVER been my cup of tea, I can never "get in to" it and it seems to bore me to no end. However, it was really noble of you to try Verne's stuff. I am pretty good at accidentally stealing from libraries too... have you seen the Seinfeld episode based on Jerry having a book due for over 30 years? Hilarity ensues.
[Hannah] Monday, July 30th
I still have books of mine from when I was maybe five, I can't get rid of them. It's just too painful, lol.
[Anesthesia] Monday, July 30th
Trust me hun. I have yet to meet anyone that actually enjoyed a Jules Verne book.. AND I was one of those kids reading those types of books when I was younger. When I was like.. 9 or 11.. my favorite book was The Phantom of the Opera.. and yeah, it's cool now because they made an awesome movie out of it.. and etc.. But back then people were like "you're reading whaaa?".. Jules Verne though.. He has those books that you really do want to read but try and stop.. try and stop.. because really.. his books aren't all that interesting to most people. And secretly, I think that most people that say they've read his books only read them.. not for their great quality but to be able to say.. "yes, I read a Jules Verne book" because they know no one else has. :)

LMFAO.
I swear, your blogs never fail to amuse me.
But I agree.
Jules Verne leave me rather unsatisfied.
& That's not what I want at all while reading a book.
I'm not saying he isn't brilliant though.
I mean, if thousands of other people (you can never be quite sure, can you?) claim the he's as brilliant as ... brilliance, than I guess he is, right?
Just not ... my kind of brilliance.
My library seems to consist of cheesy romances, vampires, mysteries, and ... I don;t know how to categorize the others.
Hahahahahaha. XD
But I swear.
The last part of your blog made me crack up. ;]
I hope you've been well!
& Take care!
xx. Chels.

Hey, thanks for keeping my great-gram in your thoughts. I really appreciate it. :]
Again, this layout made me laugh! I just love the bunny: Wait, I'm a duck? Hahahah.
ONG!!!!11!1 CONi iZ LYKK A THEEF1! ONG LYK CECH HER!!!1!

Also, this is not as interesting as trying to find out how many comments LJ will take before it EXPLODES!!!
Greymatter probably goes on forever. And ever. And ever. And like, more than five digits forever.
[Ali] Sunday, July 29th
Jules Verne. What a silly name.
And CALVIN AND HOBBES! Can't forget THEM!
[Crystal] Sunday, July 29th
your layout made me laugh..haha..
'wait, i'm not a duck...?'
haha...
when i was a youngling, my literary collection consisted sweet valley kids and i still read them today..haha..
[Cecilie] Sunday, July 29th
Haha. I haven't even heard about any of those authors. Is that bad?
[Demi] Sunday, July 29th
This is completely random, but Jules Verne totally reminds me of the movie, Back to the Future.. nevermind. I've heard of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, and I even watched some movie adaptation to it ages ago. Since I thought the movie was so boring, I knew I wouldn't like the book. D:
I remember watching the Babysitter's Club show! To be honest, I was more into the Nacy Drew books. :]
[Bebe] Saturday, July 28th
I think Jules Verne is good! we had to make an poster of him in school!
Bebe
[Crystal] Saturday, July 28th
Ya~ Thanks. X3 I took some tylonal. Cute little blog you have here! ^^
[Nanda] Saturday, July 28th
I've never heard of any of those authors o.O I hope you enjoyed reading the books!
[Isabelle] Saturday, July 28th
To be honest, I've never heard of any of those books ever, in my whole life. Not to mention the author too. But that might be because I've been alive for only around 13 years.
Lol, I guess they don't bother anyways, since it being eight years. I'm interested to know the overdue fine though.
[Andre] Friday, July 27th
Connie, those librarians are going to HUNT YOU DOWN!
... just because they're creepy like that and are way too protective of their precious books.
I thought I'd warn you just in case... it's not like I volunteer at a library or anything.
Well, I do.
[espoire] Friday, July 27th
I remember those books!! i had all of them...
I even remember the theme song..
Yay for me i guess lol.
[Austin] Friday, July 27th
Haha, with that !@!%! language, I'd figure your French was utterly flawless... or at least that's my inference thing going on :)
FROM EIGHT YEAR'S AGO?! O___O My librarian at my school warned me that a unchecked in library book can follow you for the rest of your known life up to your deathbed... causing series dilemmas such as the inability to get a driver's license and such. Or.. she was just in need of having all library books in by the end of the year and had to exaggerate her need :) It's a SIGN. It's a SIGN :)
[Mandie] Friday, July 27th
Hey there, thanks for the comment. Beautiful layout, I must say. You live on the East Coast? That's amazing, I've actually never been, and never seen an ocean, so I expect it'll be really nice there when I go. I've never moved in my life- always lived in the same old house on the same old street. It's good, in a way, because I often hear others complain about moving and having to re-socialize. But I think I'd like a change sometimes.
I could never sit down and read a book I wasn't totally consumed with. It just aggravates me that it isn't reaching the climax, that's all.
Garfield all the way!
Thanks,
Mandie
[Jessica] Friday, July 27th
Thanks for the comment!
I've tried doing the whole block IP thing but each time they use a different IP, so its really frustrating.
[Lily] Friday, July 27th
hey! lol it's true though...
wow love the site very nice layout .. great job on it. =D
[Eilidh] Friday, July 27th
Haha, I had to laugh - I was a babysitter's club fanatic in my day - I have like 200 of their books and nearly collected every one ever in print, and am proud of it :P I still buy ones I don't have when I see them, nice to have them all :P
But haha, Jules Verne, not my thing at all :P
[annette] Friday, July 27th
WOW! lOOOVEE this site! gahh! i love the CSS! LOL! its awesome!
[Keng] Friday, July 27th
When I was young, I think my books were all of the Nancy Drew variety. And the Berenstain Bears. <3 I tried Hardy Boys, but they didn't stick well with me as much as Nancy and those bears did. :P
I've never heard of Jules Verne before reading this entry, in all honesty. I mean, I know of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, but since I've never even looked at it (let alone read it), I never knew who wrote it. XD
If it's gone for 8 years, I'm sure no one's bothering themselves to look for it, so you're safe. :P
[Thu] Friday, July 27th
Thanks for visiting my site.
I would be in the same position as you. I like to read, but I realize that I am picky in terms of reading. And these books just aren't cut it for me. They're just like movies, there are movies you'll be interested, but there are ones you won't and you'll find it boring.
[Sasha] Friday, July 27th
I never liked Jules Verne either (so boring!!).
I did have lots of babysitters club and garfield though! (among other things :)) Though looking back on it... Garfield is not funny at all.
3 years.. a huge fine!! hopefully amnesty day is coming soon :)
[Diana] Thursday, July 26th
A library book from three years? eek. I remember there was an overdue book for a month and the librarian lectured at me. Neh. I don't even know nor heard of Jules Verne. But sounds pretty intresting.
[Shelly] Thursday, July 26th
Ahaha, a library book from three years ago? Dang, I owe the library lots of money in fines but I've returned (or completely lost) the books. XD I bet no one's really looking for a book like that though. The title of it sounds attractive though, but sometimes the title of a book doesn't always make it a good one. I'd always pick Garfield over it anyday. =P
Hm, I was never a baby's sitter club type of girl...my older sister and my cousin were, but I somehow never got into them. I was more of a Boxcar Children person...and those books about the teachers being monsters...and Nancy Drew...=]
[Nirthikaa] Thursday, July 26th
I never actually heard of Jules Verne, and from your inspiring post about the book (especially "get rid of that $%@#% french man and give me my garfield back") I have decided to not read it. It is kind of sad that you feel like you need to read a book since everyone says that it is such a great story with a meaningful message, yet the first chapter causes you to have a meeting with your bed instead. So I agree that as long as you have it, you can still get the same pleasure that many people get from reading the book.
Hmm...for the book actually being a library book that you haven't returned in 8 years...damn just imagine
the overdue fine!
And you never know if the LSA (Library's Secret Agency) came barging into your house and demanded you to return your book to the library...maybe the book has a special electronic device that enables the LSA to track down where it is...but they got lost for 8 years since the the guy driving the car was didn't want to ask for advice...
I think I have been watching to many badly-filmed espionage films... :D
[Ryan] Thursday, July 26th
Interesting! I never heard of Jules Verne, but I will make an attempt to look him up. Is he the same guy that tried to dig through the earth?
*.O Reminds me of the saying that if you dig deep enough in your backyard you can dig a hole to China.

When I was little, I used to have so many Goosebump books. Man, those used to scare the living daylights out of me, but now, I just think they're childish. I read an abridged version of 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, but when I tried reading the unabridged version this year for English class, I found it a lot harder. When they say they abridged the book, they really took out a lot of the stuff. When I was reading the unabridged version I was always like, 'Hm. They didn't have that in the other book.' I've always wanted to read Journey to the Center of the Earth, but I've never found the time to actually sit down and read it, word for word. I'm the kind of person who multi-tasks and watches TV when he reads. :)
