September 03, 2007: "it's a post about nothing (i miss seinfeld)"
to those residing in america, i hope you had a great labor day. it was really great weather here in new jersey, and that's always a plus because i didn't have to wear zero clothes and still be sweaty.

it's something i've always been excited about.

i've never really obsessed over a celebrity before, but i can say that ewan mcgregor is a pretty man. i think it helps that he's scottish because just being of that nationality gives him permission to wear a plaid skirt, right?

that's another thing i've always been excited about.

i don't really have anything monumental to report because i've been trying to have a few relaxed days before i begin that whole education thang, and so i've just been doodling lately. and this is where my writing skills really shine because remember that really well-written paragraph about a particular scottish jedi? his mentioning ties to the drawing - tada! ...if i write like this in school, i'm going to fail for sure.

uh, so i leave you with the progress of said scottish jedi clone from an island. i'm sorry for the shoddy quality, but i don't have the slightest clue how to work the scanner, and the camera is closer... proximity wins.

just to expound, i didn't quite draw in the words, but that's an idea. i think it's entirely accurate to have ewan say that.

oh! and i also have a question regarding boring junk, of which i'm attaching to an "extended" entry. yay, extending. a big thanks if you can help me, and a smaller, appreciative one if you tried.

[EDIT: 09:25PM] big thanks and love to sasha - yay! i've left up my fun extendedness for... well, lazy reasons. naturally.

i've always wondered about the copyrights of copying pieces for art purposes. i know it's completely within the american law to go to a museum and replicate what we see presented on the walls, but i don't know if that's the whole "dead artist" thing talking. i'm having a hard time obtaining permission from the photographer of the reference i've used, and i know this is trivial, but i'd love it if you could shed some light for me? alas, my big-time lawyer sister could offer little help (other than suggesting to locate and sort through her old 50-lb books and look it up - i don't even know what to look under), and really, what was the point of spending all that time studying if you can't answer my questions?

...god.

HAHAHA "zero clothes" and "something i've always been excited about" in the same sentence make me laugh like the immature bugger I am. =) Oh, have fun relaxing before that educational system grips witht that icy hand of its. lol Nice art with caption! (Have to admit, he's not too bad. ^_-)
In reply: Yeah, my roommates seem really sweet...I got worked up before about dividing the room (internally), but I think we're going to get along really well. (I want the bigger side, too!!! ...Or at least to share, lol) Yeah, I had such a fun time at the lake, and I'm glad you had fun on labor day, too. Yeah, the whether was nice...we wer also in the mountains which made it nice and cool. And thanks, at least I just got off the phone with my friend! XD OMG, sorry for such a long comment again. X

Whoa, Connie!!! That portrait is like, perfect. I have to take pictures of my drawings too -- no scanner :(

Labor Day was really nice here in Virginia too. Perfect weather :)

Thanks for the comment by the way.

Ah yes! Pretty man huh? Lol... I like the drawing by the way. Made me giggle. :D

Good question about the copyright thing. I know it was a big thing in my digital media class during the summer... It went something along the lines of: You can use it if you change it 50% and its not easily recognizable. *Don't take my word on that...* Good luck on that though... I would hate for you to have such a nice drawing you can't use. :(

Check your e-mail :)

My weekend was not long enough (even though it started at 3:45 on Thursday for me)! It's the last day off from class I'll have until Thanksgiving, technically. Weather was fantastic here as well!

[Alex] Monday, September 3rd

School for me starts on September 5th, so I have one more day to relax (excluding today). The only celebrity I have really obsessed over would have to be Angelina Jolie. I mean... *drools* The drawing you made is very well done. I remember I took drawing classes when I was little, and I was horrible at it.

[Sasha] Monday, September 3rd

beautiful drawing! :D ahhh kilts :)

Regarding copyright, I believe if you are drawing from a reference, then it is a derivative work and not subject to copyright. Since you're using the reference to make a piece of art, not 100% identical to the original, then it qualifies. (adding the quote, assuming it is not in the original, makes it different enough, IMO). Also, see: http://www.copyright.gov/circs/circ14.html

Copyright length is different depending on when the image was created... most older paintings (ie, those you see on calendars, postcards, etc) aren't restricted. But, going into a museum and painting, even if you are making a 100% copy of a painting that has copyright restrictions, isn't a violation -- since it's for educational purposes, it's fair use.
